People go on missions trips and know their lives will change. But one missions trip turned one family’s life upside down. And it gave birth to a “missions outreach” in the United States that we now call the LifeLight Festival. As the Greene family followed the call to share the Gospel in the United States, others joined in the effort, and this ripple effect of changed lives continues on today at the annual music festival held in Worthing, South Dakota over Labor Day Weekend. LifeLight’s goal is to use the combination of music and the message of Jesus Christ to see changed lives for the glory of God.

Each year there is something that makes the festival special. But this year was extra special. This year I was able to bring a good friend along who has never been before. He has been experiencing hardships in every aspect of his life. From a career of 25 years ending, family issues , and health problems. He is a very faithful believer, but has been feeling that God has abandoned him. On Saturday night I could tell that he was struggling emotionally . At that point I asked him to go for a walk with me . I led him to the prayer tent. We spent the next hour or so talking, praying, and crying with one of your prayer warriors. It was like we were the only three people there. God filled us with his spirit. My friend has thanked me several times since that night. ~ Bill

The LifeLight Festival is the largest and most well known aspect of the ministry and is faithfully offered at no cost to the public. Beginning on a church lawn for one night in 1998, it has since become one of the nation’s largest music festivals. Held annually over Labor Day weekend in Sioux Falls, SD, the festival attracts hundreds of thousands of people from all over the country and world.

As a journalist, I covered the festival and the ministry with objectivity in mind…as someone who studies popular culture as a way to explain and define society, I was mesmerized by LifeLight. While most Christian music festivals tend to draw a throng of converts who already preach the message they’re singing along to, the LifeLight Festival always attracted people who didn't fit the Christian mold, which is exactly what they wanted in their mission to take the church beyond the church walls.
